I. Love. Cake.
Most just chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Did you ever have the Ultimate chocolate cake at O' Charley's? It was soooo rich and chocolatey. Unfortunatley, I don't think they make it anymore.
Pretty much every cake I eat now I compare to O' Charley's ultimate chocolate cake. I know that may sound sad/crazy, but it was that good.
B and I drove up to Sonoma on Saturday to meet with our Cake baker, Christina. Like I've mentioned before, we knew we wanted to have Christina make our wedding cake as soon as we tasted one of her wedding cakes at my friend's wedding last July. I love how beautiful wedding cakes are, but I hate when you bite into a really lovely cake that tastes like saw dust.
The other big reason we are going with Occasional Cakes is the price point. Most of all of the bakers in the city charge at least $7-$10 a slice. With the large wedding we are having, we need a lot of cake and spending close to $2K on cake for us was out of the question.
Christina charges $4.50 per serving, which is much more reaonable given the number of servings we will need.
When we arrived at Christina's house, she had a beautiful set up waiting for us based on our favorite flavors:
That's yellow cake and chocolate cake up on the left and carrot cake cupcakes with cream cheese frosting up on the right.
For frostings we had our pick of:
vanilla butter cream, chocolate mousse, cream cheese, chocolate ganache, and rasberry filling
I was overwhelmed just looking at all of these options. Christina left to let us sample things on our own, and I have to tell you the honest truth:
Everything was delicious. When I slathered the chocolate ganache over the chocolate cake and took my first bite, I thought Yesssss. this is it. Christina's cake would definitely give O'Charley's ultimate cake a run for its money. Her cake was soft and moist. It was sweet but not too sweet.
Ya'll. I am excited. I didn't even realize how excited I would be about the cake.
After the tasting we got down to business about the cake's appearance. I showed her my inspiration shots.
I was a little nervous about showing her my favorite:
Remember this beauty? I was nervous just because it is so much more involved than the others I had picked out, but her face immediately lit up when she saw it! She was so excited about the design and doing her own interpretation of it!! Since the dessert table cloth is going to be an emerald green, I think we're going to go with shades of orange and yellow for the cake with similar lace edging (I even showed her pictures of my dress for lacespiration). I think we're going to go with rainbow colored candies around the cake, so the yellow and orange should be a nice bright pop of color.
The best part is, the cake will be five layers, and we get to incorporate all of our favorite flavors into the cake because we can have different flavors with different fillings in each of the layers.
Even though we walked into the process pretty clueless about cake making and design, the tasting has definitely been one of the most fun and exciting wedding tasks to date.
Happy wednesday folks! Now the cake is nailed down, the rest is smooth sailing from here. 🙂
