Last month I started my very own DIY photo a day project, and I really enjoyed it. I chose a long list of possible prompts for the month without assigning them to a specific day. I tried to pick some that I knew were easy (like M+V or love or my cat Scratch'n), but I also wanted words that could be broadly interpreted.
Each day I either purposefully chose the prompt I was going to photograph, or more often, I just kept the list handy and took advantage of photo opportunities as they were happening. This is really my favorite part of this project. As I became more familiar with the prompts (and I think this will just get better each month), I just started to recognize the right moments to fit the prompts. I think it also helps that I can very creatively interpret the prompts. They can be abstract. Here are pictures from September:
I'm keeping it up in October, and I've updated my word list slightly. I've kept most of the same words but added a few that are specific for my October (like #birthday).
If you are interested in doing your own DIY photo a day project, first I highly recommend it and second you are more than welcome to use any of my prompts.
The idea behind this project is simple. Choose your own set of 30-35 words/prompts for yourself at the beginning of the month. If you want to make your life easier, give yourself more words to choose from. Then take one photo each day in response to one of the prompts. In a given month, you can only use each prompt once. I upload each of my photos to Instagram so that I can share them easily.
That's pretty much it! Please let me know if you're doing your own DIY Photo a day project so that I can follow along and use the hashtag #diyphotoaday. Happy picture taking!
