For several months this year I tried to do #photoaday on Instagram. At the beginning of the month on Instagram you can find several awesome #photoaday prompts numbered by day and laid out for you. They are great, but after a few months I quickly began to feel like they were a little too structured for me. I liked the incentive to take a photo a day, but I didn’t really like getting forced into taking certain photos each day. So I decided that I wanted to create my own version of photo a day. Here’s what’s different about my DIY photo a day:
1. I choose 31 of my favorite concepts/prompts to photograph (above). These are the ideas/concepts that seemed simple, achievable, and special to me. I like these better than forcing myself into taking a picture of “chewy” on a the 14th of a given month.
2. I did not assign a day to each prompt. I have to try and photograph each of these prompts once within a giving month, but it does not matter which day I do which prompt. For me this gives me structure, but not too much. I can focus more on the special big and small moments that happen to me throughout a day (hopefully taking several pictures a day), and I can cross the prompts off as I get them. Some will obviously be easier than others, and the photos will get more difficult as I approach the end of the month and narrow down the prompts.
3. At the beginning of each month I will post my prompts for the month. I can choose to keep ALL the same words from the last month (if I realllly liked them all), or I can choose to switch some of them out for other concepts/prompts that are special to me that month.
Sound fun? Want to create your own #diyphotoaday ?
If you’re on Instagram follow me (and send me a message so I can follow you), and post a single picture with all of your prompts for the month (like the one above). Make sure to pick 31 (30 is enough for September, but I gave myself an out) of your favorite prompts. Make them easy and make them you. Then tag each picture each day with #diyphotoaday! I will tag all my daily photos that way (starting today!) I know we’re almost half way through the month, but feel free to jump in mid-way for a practice month. 🙂 It’s never too late to start something fun.
Here are the photos I’ve taken so far this month:
September 1. #smile
September 4. #food
September 5. #words
September 7. #sky (texas style)
September 10. #drink
celebrating with our favorite wine from our wedding
September 11. #pattern (my dress)
I hope you’ll follow along and create your own #diyphotoaday.
