I met Kristin (The Cuisinerd) on the very first night of Alt Summit in January 2012. I knew immediately that we would be friends. She is so real, funny, and lovely that I literally spent almost the entire conference glued to her side. I was so excited to see her again this year at Alt, and I’m so jazzed to have the chance to feature her as today’s Blog Crush! Her sense of humor, amazing recipes and striking designs are addictive. Read on to learn more about Kristin and her blog:
I started blogging back in the early 2000’s (the Live Journal days) mostly about music and lifestyle design as an additional creative outlet while writing an arts and entertainment column for a newspaper during college. I really didn’t start taking content creation seriously until 2006 when I started my first blog Pretty Gritty (why it’s still live, I don’t know) and what first started as a bi-weekly food column on this site, that category soon took over my life and main focus of interest to which I launched The Cuisinerd in 2010.
Research is my favorite. I love the thrill of the hunt, especially when rounding up themed tabletop and kitchen design posts. In terms of challenges, I have a really strict content policy for myself so I only post things that I think are worthy of being in a side bar magazine article. I take maybe too much time on the layout and design of every post – I’m learning to let go a little.
I really enjoy pushing the concept of food in terms of design, and I did a small fashion inspired series last summer called “Style Servings” which translated clothing trends into food. I’d like to go do more of these!
I go outside! A walk around the Silver Lake Reservoir or the LA Zoo always gets my head in a good creative space. I’m not distracted by anyone or social media and I can let thoughts collect. When I can’t take a break outside, I do a little catalog or magazine browsing to get inspiration on latest trends/colors etc. in other categories (design, fashion, travel) that I might be able to apply somehow with a food twist.
Do I really just have to pick one!? I like to accessorize with playful footwear and costume jewelry – here are a few of my shoes that have some serious personality:
“Taco USA” is wildly entertaining. It’s basically the history and expansion of Mexican food in American culture. I highly recommend, it’s very funny!
I just started flipping through “The Flavor Thesaurus” and I’m really excited about expanding my pallet with unique taste parings and it’s an
enjoyable cheeky read to boot!
Blog-wise I want to continue to secure sponsored content partnerships with large brands so I can execute bigger projects with better funding and outreach. I’d also love to get a little sponsored travel or press trips under my belt, but who doesn’t? I’m also interested in moving forward with pitching and writing/producing television concept ideas for either The Food Network or Cooking Channel…fingers crossed some of my ideas might make the final cut.
I don’t even have a posted recipe or photo for my go-to comfort meal because it’s always seemed so basic never thought my readers would care! I absolutely love this dinner: Lemon rosemary salmon, roasted garlic tomatoes, sautéed collards and couscous.
However, a current meal obsession that I do have a recipe for is this “South West” Kale Salad – I think kale has become my go-to lately because I’ve been writing food and restaurant reviews quite frequently for other publications and that causes me to eat a lot of meals out and those aren’t always the healthiest. When all you are eating is desserts or pasta for an article…greens definitely sound like a sweet relief when cooking back home!

You know – going a little full circle here back to
my book reccos, but I think I would like to meet Michi Girl. She’s been
