On Saturday, September 12th-exactly one year after we welcomed our beanshine into the world-we celebrated her with our closest friends and family. My mom surprised us and flew out for the weekend.
She called me at work on my cell and asked for a favor.
I said, “anything.”
She said, “pick me up at the hotel after work.”
I burst into tears on the catwalk outside our offices. I’d had a tough week and had so much to do for Bea’s birthday. I was so relieved and happy. I just needed my mom. I can’t imagine Bea’s first birthday without her Gigi there. I’m so grateful she made the trip. Having her here really made the weekend.
For Bea’s birthday, we chose a simple sunshine theme (also the theme of her nursery) to celebrate her first trip around the sun.
Bea wore a simple felt crown I had made for her and a white dress.
We had cupcakes (made from this recipe. They were the best.) and tacos.
There were big yellow balloons, tissue paper balls (thanks, mom), a beatrice banner, felt garlands, and a felt sun I made to decorate the back yard. My friend Lisa came over a few weekends in advance for a crafternoon, and she (being the master crafter that she is) singlehandedly sewed almost all the felt garland pieces and sewed and painted the Beatrice banner. I made the felt sun from small pieces of the garland (more on this soon).
I also bought these little marquis letters from target (they were on sale) that spelled BEAN, and I painted them with gold glitter. We put them on the bar out front.
Beatrice had a ball. She ran around and played and hugged new friends and cousins. She stole toys from other littles (sorry, Carlo).
She hated her first taste of cake (she can’t be my child).
It was a good day.
Year 1, you rocked.
