It’s been too long since my last Artfully Inspired post. I first saw Ana Teresa Fernandez‘s work at a benefit for Art Practical last month. One of her paintings was featured at the event and while I was looking at the painting slack-jawed, my dear friend Kara (one of Art Practical’s Managing Editors) started telling me about Ana’s work and followed up later to send me a link to her site.
Ana works in multiple genres. All of the paintings below actually depict different performance pieces. I’m not an expert on writing about Art (like Kara), but I do know this:
Ana’s pieces move me in a way that make me need to sit down and rethink the ground beneath my feet.
Race, gender, class, and the physicality of humanity are all pixels blurring together in her paintings until they seem to burst out of the canvas. The motion of the water, and light and body blend together, caught in these precious snapshots of calm or struggle or both.
